Artist's Comments

I almost like how this came out better then the whole scene. Almost. I am really glad that I didn't post this without a scene back when I finished it.

I wanted to make a Keyblade awhile back when I found a tutorial for one and said to myself "I can do better than that!". It took awhile, but I like how it came out. I also think its faithful to the real Keyblade (I've seen some out there that make me think "that's not quite right" or "they took a shortcut there").

The center of the Keyblade was a cylinder that I worked into the right shape. The flat parts of the hilt and blade were traced in Inkscape then extruded in 3ds max. Overall, the modeling of the Keyblade itself was relatively easy.

The clip was the hardest part of the Keyblade as I didn't want to take any shortcuts. I wanted the clip to look exactly like the pictures of the real thing (which I saw a lot of other 3D Keyblades did not). Even worse was when the scale of the clip didn't match the chain I had made. I managed to make it all work out in the end though.

The scene I made to go with it can be viewed here.

A woman without a man is like an octopus without a ninth arm. A ninth arm would be somewhat useful, but eight is fine.

Hmm... maybe I should have it printed... that might be interesting. I've never really printed any of my work before.

Thanks. Video game 3D models are optimized to be as detailed as they can be while using the fewest polygons. They also use a lot of detailed textures to substitute for not having many polygons. My approach is more like what you see in CG movies or game cutscenes. I try to model every little detail except those that would be impractical to (which I use nice textures to make up for). Also, in games, Kingdom Hearts for example, you're too busy whacking things around with the Keyblade to notice if the holes in the hilt are actually indented or if they're just painted on. Since my work is mostly still images, you notice the details a lot better... meaning I can't cut corners much. That's okay though, because I like making things as detailed as I can.
